konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

why did u go through the effort of making any kind of web app if you’ll stop me from using it within 15 seconds

why do u think this’ll make me install ur app rather than just make me go “fuck you” and wait till im on a computer so i can avoid your shit

konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

its wild how many apps do this - facebook, instagram, tiktok, pinterest, reddit. i guess add onedrive to that list lmao

between this and all the newsletter/notification popups on websites i gotta wonder what kind of kick in the head all of these project leads gotta be on to force their devs to add this shit

konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

the modern web feels like its so much of this - competent devs who'd make a seamless service that lets u do what u need, hindered at every step by corporate saying we need more datamining.

erode every bit of usability and respect of ur platform for those $3 microsoft, sure. thanks, satya nadell

re: konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

@dogo There's one reason they all do this. Getting more profit off your data.
It's much harder to adblock an app. And an app gets way more access to your device than a browser sandbox.

re: konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

@fennecbyte i assumed as such on the count of apps like facebook always doing it. having it pop up on a cloud storage service is a bit more ridiculous though. the most frustrating part is just knowing a perfectly usable service, and one riddled with less interrupts, is all there, were it not for the money incentive

re: konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

@fennecbyte @dogo there's way more tracking possible, too

re: konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

@noiob @fennecbyte ios 14/15 started rolling out this feature that hinders tracking capabilities. idk the technicalities of it but i wonder how it would effect the future development of this kind of stuff

re: konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

@dogo @fennecbyte there's still the majority of people who use Android, and the advantage of having your logo in someone's app drawer / on someone's homescreen

re: konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

@noiob @fennecbyte yeah for sure, and i doubt theyd implement a useragent check for ios to just let u use the web app without hassle bc of the change

re: konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

@noiob @fennecbyte although, if with this move web apps end up offering them more data than installed apps do... maybe? no idea

re: konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

@dogo @fennecbyte iOS webapp support is kind of a joke, they don't even have notifications

re: konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

@noiob @fennecbyte honestly good

konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

@dogo Yeah I've always wondered how awful it must feel to be on the dev team who makes the mobile web pages where they do this. They put all this work into making the website, then they're told to put up a big irritating pop-up that says, "do not use"

konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

@Gulfie exactly, that's gotta kill u inside

konsti rants, the modern web is a joke

@dogo I think one big thing is being able to send notifications and be present on the phone screen.

@Gregor every os supports pinning a site as a homescreen icon. idk if they can deliver notifications tho
